There are different things you can do on the ground, wheelie (Only on bikes) where you shift your wii remote towards you(steering wheel) or there are tricks that can only be done on manual, i suggest you go on automatic as it is quicker if you forget to drift, i suggest reading the instruction manual for more information on the controlls on how to do these

I think it just depends on what you're tricking off of. If you trick off a ramp, you're going to fly high. If you trick off a bump in the ground, you don't go very high. You can do a trick ANYTIME your kart is about go go airborne, even if it's just for a second.

Most of the time if you do a trick off of something that is part of the ground and do it off of the edge you should barely touch the ground. For ezample in Coconut mall those little fountain things, try going off the edge of it and you should barely get off of the ground.

Trick more parallel to the ground.

For example, on DK Summit/Snowboard Cross, if you trick off the top of the bump (parallel to the ground), you don't fly too far, if you trick off the side of the bump facing up (45 degree angle), you're going to get more air.
