It has been 4 years or more since the release of the r4 DS Revolution for the Nintendo DS and DS lite consoles.  Since its release there have been numerous improvements and enhancements to the R4 DS Revolution both in design as well as in the firmware software that runs the R4 DS.

When the R4 DS was first released there were no other slot 1 flash cards for the Nintendo DS.  The only way one could play their Nintendo DS homebrew games or applications was by hacking a Gameboy Advance flash card like the SuperCard SD and adding to it a PASSKEY in order for the Nintendo DS to recognize it as a flash card that was compatible.

There reallyw asn’t an issue with this except that the cartridge would always stick out of the NDS system itself, because it used the slot 2 in your Nintendo DS.  More annoying than that though was the fact that you always had to convert each and every file before being able to use it. A limitation that was in place as a result of these nds flash cards actually being GBA flash cards with an updated firmware.

The R4 DS cleared the slate and made something truly unique possible. It explains completely why the R4 DS is as popular as it is. The first card of its kind that actually looked and felt just like a regular Nintendo DS card. And definitely the first card that was able to make use of very inexpensive Micro SD Card flash media for storing and loading your games, something that had just not been done before.

But the R4 DS Revolution brought more to the table than just look and feel. It made loading your open source / homebrew games quick and easy. How easy? So easy that you have to do little more than select the files your want on your micro SD Card and drag and drop them, then load them up. No conversion was required, and games started being released quicker because only one version had to be created for the R4 DS type card.

The r4 ds is the reason that nds homebrew has been a huge hit on the NDS. And thank goodness it did. Not in the leat because when the DSi was released, there was no more slot 2 for the GBA flash cards that had been used prior. You couldn’t use your GBA flash cards on the DSi any longer. Without a card like the R4 DS Revolution, you would not be playing your homebrew games today…. and that would mean a lot of missed, great games and apps, and a darn shame.
